hi there ia was pondering the entire time why its translated as “abfall”. normally its not used for people, instead “Abschaum” would be more fitting. i tried to think of a word thats even more fitting but could not think of one. =(

Hello! Thank you very much for reading tcf in german! Since I started translating, I’ve been kinda waiting for this question, because it’s a very obvious one, I would ask myself too.

“Trash” was actually the hardest word to translate into german, because if you think about it, it is very obvious, that you would translate it into “Abschaum”, since that’s the only synonym, that is actually used for people, unlike “Abfall”, which is, like you said, more often used for things. But if you translate “Abschaum” back into english, it’s means less “Trash”, but instead “Scum”. That’s the reason why I did not choose the word “Abschaum” for “Trash” since the novel clearly states that og Cale was very trashy, but he was not scum, since he never acrtually hit someone. Since the english translation used such a clear differenciation between those words, I did the same with “Abfall” and “Abschaum”, using those two words in the same context.
I also use “Abschaum” a few times later in the story, but only in the context, when the english meaning was talking about “scum”.

I hope this clears things up for you! <3
